Mechanical engineering is one of the oldest and broadest engineering disciplines which has played a key role in shaping our world today. It has always been in the forefront of developing new technologies for a number of industries including scientific research, robotics, healthcare, transport etc.
Engineers at Diamond don’t really have a ‘typical day’, our job has a lot of variety and this is one of the things I enjoy the most about this place. Our projects can be really big, so engineering at Diamond is a team effort: we have many meetings with scientists, other engineers and technicians to discuss concepts or proposed designs.
I am now a Mechanical Project Engineer so I am more deeply involved in the analysis of our systems and optimising their performance. I also liaise more closely with the scientists (our clients) to develop solutions to their technical problems. Most of our systems utilise mechanical and electrical assemblies with a local control system talking to the site wide network.
I like to take on design challenges to meet the requirements of some of the UK’s best scientists working at Diamond. So, my life at Diamond is exciting and interesting because of not only the daily challenges but also the knowledge that I gain from each challenge.
What I enjoy the most are the people that I work with. We are an excellent team where everyone is happy to share their knowledge and years of experience with each other without hesitation. This sharing environment is something very important but very difficult to find in the majority of companies out there. However, here at Diamond we have a very talented, experienced and well trained team where we all learn from each other.
