We're celebrating the art of world changing science with Oxfordshire Artweeks!
In 2022 Diamond Light Source is celebrating its 20th anniversary and 15 years of research and innovation, and to help commemorate the occasion we are presenting a special exhibition of selected photographs from throughout Diamond.
From the 14th to the 22nd May, 2022, you can visit our outdoor photographic exhibit in honour of the special double anniversary year. Circumnavigating the "ring" of the synchrotron, these 79 images will give a behind-the-scenes insight into what goes on inside our iconic building.
We are the UK’s national synchrotron, working like a giant microscope, harnessing the power of electrons to produce bright light that scientists can use to study anything from fossils to jet engines to viruses and vaccines. The machine accelerates electrons to near light speeds so that they give off light 10 billion times brighter than the sun. These bright beams are then directed off into laboratories known as ‘beamlines’. Here, scientists use the light to study a vast range of subject matter, from new medicines and treatments for disease to innovative engineering and cutting-edge technology. Whether it’s fragments of ancient paintings or unknown virus structures, at the synchrotron, scientists can study their samples using a machine that is 10,000 times more powerful than a traditional microscope.
This photo exhibition shines an artistic light on this research and innovation, showing some of the unique and special moments and sights of science on the cutting edge.
Diamond is one of the most advanced scientific facilities in the world, and its pioneering capabilities are helping to keep the UK at the forefront of scientific research.
Diamond Light Source is located at Harwell Science and Innovation Campus - a working science hub bringing together some of the UK's brightest minds. As such, there are a few things to bear in mind regarding parking and navigating the photo exhibition:
You can follow the route from either right to left or left to right, depending on where you are able to find parking. The exhibition route follows the perimeter fence of Diamond (roughly shown in the map below), and will be signposted from both the start and the end of the route.
During the weekend, parking will be available in the Frome Road parking lot (this space is not available during the working week). The parking lot will be signposted, and is indicated in the map below. The highlighted route takes you from the car park to the exhibition start via paths and pavement. The parking lot will be open during daylight hours.
As Harwell campus is a working science facility, parking may be limited during the working week. For details of parking on campus, visit the Harwell website.
