Professor Gianluigi Botton joined Diamond Light Source as CEO in 2023 from the Canadian Light Source, where he had served as Science Director since May 2019. Professor Botton is a renowned expert in microscopy and spectroscopy with an impressive track record in research and funding, having secured more than $50M as Principal Investigator and $90M as a co-investigator and has more than 350 peer-reviewed publications. His work has been cited more than 34,000 times. Over the course of his highly successful career, Gianluigi has been awarded the Microbeam Analysis Society’s Presidential Award (2020) and the Metal Physics Award of the Canadian Materials Science Conference (2017); he is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada (2018) and Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America (2014).
Dr Adrian Mancuso joined Diamond in November 2022 from the European XFEL facility, where he has held the position of Group Leader and Leading Scientist for the Single Particles, Clusters, and Biomolecules & Serial Femtosecond Crystallography (SPB/SFX) instrument Group since 2010. As Physical Science Director, Adrian is responsible for overall strategic leadership, direction and management of Diamond’s Physical Science Division.
Prof. Sir David Stuart FRS is MRC Professor of Structural Biology at the University of Oxford, and Head of the Division of Structural Biology at the Department of Clinical Medicine. He was appointed Director of Life Sciences at Diamond Light Source in 2008. His principal research interests include the structure of viruses and viral proteins as well as cellular proteins, especially those that interact with viruses.
Dr Richard Walker joined Diamond Light Source as Technical Director in January 2002. He was a member of the Daresbury Laboratory SRS team for over 12 years before joining Sincrotrone Trieste in Italy as Head of the Insertion Devices Group before becoming Director of the Light Sources Division. Dr Walker is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and was visiting Professor of Physics at the University of Oxford from 2005-2023.
Andrea Ward joined Diamond Light Source in 2019, with 15 years experience as a Senior Finance professional, and is Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Deputy CEO. During a 12-year tenure at Vertex Pharmaceuticals, she worked with the Board to lead finance and procurement functions in Europe, later moving to Canada with the business to assist with acquisition and commercialisation opportunities. Andrea has also worked at ResMed and the Ontario Lottery and Gaming corporation.
