The Structures and Surfaces Group

The Structure and Surface Group consists of four beamlines dedicated to photoemission-based experiments and surface diffraction investigations. The beamlines cover a wide range of photon energies (20eV – 30keV) and also offer a suite of specialised sample environments to realise operando experiments for electronic devices, electrochemistry and catalysis studies. The scientific areas explored by the user community include quantum materials, 2D materials, biological films, biomaterials, heritage conservation and energy material.

Detailed descriptions of the beamlines can be found here:

The Structure and Surface Group User Meeting 2025

The Structure and Surface Group will be hosting its User Meeting at Diamond Light Source on Monday 3 November to Tuesday 4 November 2025.

The event will bring together user groups and scientists from the diverse fields across the Structure and Surface beamlines at Diamond to foster discussion and collaborations through shared science and technique applications.

The user meeting will:

  • showcase the recent scientific results and the latest developments across the beamlines
  • feature invited talks as well as a poster session
  • provide the Diamond Structure and Surface community with the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas and discuss future directions and requirements for the group

The first day of the meeting will be dedicated to beamline updates in the context of Diamond-II. On the second day (Tuesday) we will run two parallel workshops around specific topics: Perspectives of UHV surface diffraction (I07 EH2 endstation); a comprehensive review of the Diamond-ARPES future.
