Overview

Diamond Light Source is delighted to announce the 9th edition of the Synchrotron Radiation School, taking place from Sunday 21st to Friday 26th September 2025.

The SR School aims to provide postgraduate students and post-doctoral researchers, who have little experience of synchrotron radiation (SR), with a broad-based introduction to many of the different types of experiments conducted using SR.

The school is largely aimed at physical scientists, but life scientists are welcome to apply. This event will give the attendees the opportunity to obtain hands-on practical experience of performing an experiment on 17 Diamond Light Source beamlines.

The school will take place in person, between Diamond Light Source and Jesus College (Oxford), where accommodation for the participants will also be provided.

The format of the school will include a “break the ice” introduction session inclusive of a communication/engagement talk, will be followed by two full days of lectures on SR methods, two days of experiments on the Diamond Light Source beamlines plus one final symposium day with a number of leading synchrotron practitioners talking about their research.

Topics

  • The Diamond Synchrotron
  • X-ray optics, detectors and beamlines
  • X-ray Scattering
  • Symmetry and Crystallography
  • X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy
  • Transmission Electron Microscopy
  • Using software to look at SR data

Synchrotron Radiation use of:

  • ARPES
  • Infrared and Terahertz spectroscopy
  • Powder Diffraction
  • Resonant and Magnetic Scattering
  • Small Angle Scattering
  • X-ray Imaging
  • X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Diamond Light Source beamlines

The heart of the SR School is the opportunity to do hands on experiments on a number of Diamond beamlines on days 3 and 4 of the school. Successful applicants will have a chance to measure real samples and see how data analysis is done. Each participant will attend four practical sessions.

The beamlines participating in the course are outline below (click on each beamline for further details).

Successful applicants will be invited to indicate up to 6 beamlines in order of preference and the organisers will endeavour to allocate practical sessions according to choices made. Please note that being allocated to one of the preferred Beamlines is not guaranteed.

Application

This course is always very popular and highly oversubscribed, therefore all applicants are required to complete the application form including a reference letter from their supervisor. The strength of the application and the statement from the applicant's referee are crucial to Diamond in the selection process.

Crucial to the selection will be the strength of the application, the statement from the applicant's referee as well as the commitment to attend SR School 2025 in its entirety.

Finally, priority will be given to applicants in the earliest stage of their research career, and to those who have definite plans to use Diamond Light Source for their future experiments.

To apply, please complete the following application form by the end of Sunday 27th July 2025.

Successful applicants will be informed on the outcome of their application by the week commencing Monday 4th August 2025.
