We are deeply saddened by the passing of our dear friend and colleague, Dr. Karen Davies, in February 2025.

Karen joined eBIC in 2021 as a Principal EM Scientist, bringing an exceptional blend of scientific brilliance, dedication, and generosity of spirit. Her research profoundly advanced our understanding of how fundamental life processes are structured within the cell. From her pioneering postdoctoral work at the Max Planck Institute in Frankfurt on ATP synthase and respiratory supercomplexes, to her studies on photosynthesis and bacterial warfare at Berkeley, and her exemplary contributions at eBIC in research, teaching, mentoring, management, and user support, Karen’s scientific impact was both wide-ranging and profound.

Beyond her research achievements, Karen was an extraordinary mentor, collaborator, and friend whose kindness, insight, and enthusiasm touched the lives of so many.

To honor her memory and celebrate her scientific legacy, a Memorial Symposium will be held at EMCC Nottingham on 22 April 2026, immediately after the BCI User meeting, and preceding the CCP-EM Spring Symposium.

This event will bring together colleagues, collaborators, and friends to reflect on Karen’s remarkable career and enduring influence.

This will be a half-day hybrid symposium with no registration fee.

In-person attendance will be allocated on a first-come basis. We recommend early registration to avoid disappointment.

Spaces for online attendance are unlimited.

A detailed programme will be announced in early 2026.
