Find out more about our ambitious upgrade project, delivering more brightness, more coherence, and greater speed of analysis to UK science. More about Diamond-II
Find out more about Diamond's response to virus research.
As a world-class synchrotron facility enabling research by leading academic and industrial groups in physical and life sciences, Diamond has always pioneered a model of highly efficient and uncompromised infrastructure, driven by technical and engineering innovation.
To continue this delivery of world-changing science, Diamond is undertaking a co-ordinated programme of development – the Diamond-II Programme– which will combine a major machine upgrade and new and upgraded beamlines, as well as a comprehensive series of upgrades to our optics, detectors, sample environments, sample delivery capabilities and computing. Diamond has seen milestone progress for Diamond-II this year with the award of the first phase of funding in June 2022, and we are now pleased to announce the launch of the Technical Design Report for the Diamond-II Machine.
The Technical Design Report follows the publication of the Science Case and Conceptual Design Report, which form the backbone of the programme.
Dr Richard Walker, Technical Director for Diamond Light Source and Interim Senior Responsible Owner for Diamond-II says:
The Technical Design Report marks the significant progress that has been made with the design of the Diamond-II Machine since the publication of the Conceptual Design Report in May 2019. The report is the work of more than 70 staff and collaborators and is a great testament to Diamond’s dedication to engineering excellence and scientific innovation which through Diamond-II will maintain Diamond at the forefront of synchrotron science facilities.
The Technical Design Report lays out in detail the physics, engineering and other technical requirements for the storage ring and injector, as well as the logistics, planning and safety management needed for its successful delivery.
