The electron Bio-Imaging Centre was established at Diamond Light Source following the award of a £15.6 million grant from the Wellcome Trust, the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC).
eBIC mission:
eBIC is a CryoEM center providing scientists with state-of-the-art experimental equipment and expertise in the field of cryo-electron microscopy, for single particle analysis, electron tomography and electron diffraction. The location of eBIC enables scientists to combine their techniques with many of the other cutting-edge approaches that Diamond offers.
Currently eBIC houses five Titan Krios microscopes, a Talos Arctica, two Glacios, a Scios and an Aquilos cryo-FIB/SEM, and a Leica CryoCLEM.
Access to eBIC is available and currently operating under general beamline guidelines.
We are able to offer remote access, unattended automated data collection (currently only available: data collection using TFS EPU and TFS Tomography) and sample mail-in services for all research areas.
COVID-19 research should be requested through rapid access proposals following these instructions.
NOTE: Diamond EHC +44 (0)1235 778787 are available for support providing 24-hour coverage during the week when the beamline is on. Over the weekend EHC coverage is for 12hours only from 7am-7pm Sat & Sun.
We now have an opportunity for a Postdoctoral Research Associate to join Professor Zhang’s lab at the Electron Bio-Imaging Centre (eBIC), Diamond Light Source, UK to develop new methods in cryoET and subtomogram averaging for in situ structural biology.
In situ structural biology by cryoET is a fast-growing field. However, software to push the quality and resolution of tomographic reconstruction is urgently needed. The current existing reconstruction software packages have limitations in refining all 3D spatial parameters, resulting suboptimal reconstruction. We have recently developed a new tilt series alignment algorithm for all 5 spatial parameters at each tilt, which is also performed entirely in Fourier space and vastly increases the processing speed. We are seeking highly motivated scientist to develop this further, including new subtomogram averaging methods in conjunction with our new cryoET data collection schemes
