I13's large experimental hutches are well suited to customising the environment of a sample. In previous and ongoing experiments, samples have been heated, cooled, compressed and subjected to voltages, chemical processes and acoustic waves.
Note that equipment for customising sample environments is generally provided by users.
80kg rig used for subjecting materials and biological samples to varying levels of compression. (University of Manchester)
Liquid nitrogen cryojet used to limit beam damage to protein crystals.
Loudspeaker emitting sound into a cochlea during imaging. (C Richter et al)
Acoustic pulse generator and furnace for melting metals during imaging. (University of Manchester)
