In May 2010, a formal collaboration was established between Diamond Light Source and The University of Manchester.
The initial focus of that collaboration was to build and operate I13-2, the Diamond Manchester Imaging Branchline. I13-2 performs real space imaging and tomography and has been used in support of studies on subjects as varied as volcanic magma, arthritic joints and structural composites.
Over time the Diamond Manchester Collaboration has grown and now enables a significant team of academic and technical support staff from The University of Manchester to be based permanently at Harwell.
Academic Fellows, jointly funded by Diamond and Manchester, drive the development of collaborative research in the areas of Batteries, Catalysis, Magnetism and Resilience.
The technical team provide experimental support and data analysis for projects led by academics from Manchester and other institutions, with particular focus on the safe delivery of high-risk experiments.
Further details of The University of Manchester’s wider activities at Harwell can be found at www.harwell.manchester.ac.uk.
Diamond Light Source is the UK's national synchrotron science facility, located at the Harwell Science and Innovation Campus in Oxfordshire.
