User Preparation Lab - Chemistry (Lab 12)

This lab is designed for chemical sample preparation. Users wanting to carry out chemical or material sample preparation are encouraged to use this lab over Lab 11 which is designed for biological sample preparation.

We aim to provide basic chemicals for a well-found laboratory. We have provided a list of the chemicals usually available in the lab; please contact beamline staff if you need something that's not on the list and to confirm we have enough of what you will need. We also provide the following:

• Standard solvents are provided: 97% ethanol, ethanol absolute, acetone, methanol, IPA
• Ultrapure water is available (18.2 ohm)
• Waste containers for disposal of chemicals and contaminated consumables 

All samples and buffers must be labelled with the substance name, date and your name. Please dispose of any unused samples or buffer solution at the end of your experiment via the approved waste stream. Samples or buffers are not to be left in the lab after your beamtime unless pre-agreement has been sought from your Local Contact. Any samples left without agreement will be disposed of.

The chemistry sample preparation lab is stocked with basic consumables that would be necessary for most experiments, including:

• Syringes in a range of volumes from 1-20 mL, and 18-27 gauge needles
• Pipette tips
• Small Eppendorf-style test tubes
• Glass vials and bottles from 2-30 mL
• Plastic 30 ml universal screw top bottles
• Microscope slides
• Disposable plastic Petri dishes
• 35mm slide housings
• Pasteur pipettes
• Disposable 10A sterile scalpels
• Cling film, foil, parafilm
• Long cotton swabs
• pH indicator paper
• Abrasive paper
• Filter paper
• Eppendorf tubes 0.5 - 2.0 ml
• Falcon tubes 15 ml and 50 ml
• Plastic seal bags
• Disposable stainless steal blades for microtoming
• Anti-static weigh boats - small, medium in large and large in black and white

• Polycarbonate Capillary Tubes (2mm OD, 1.8mm ID) - For I22 Use
• Kapton wiondows for I22 Liquid Cells

In addition to bench space and standard glassware, the lab is equipped with the following: 

• Two ducted fume cupbpards with gas lines
• Eppendorf ThermoMixer C: blocks available - 0.5 ml, 1.5 ml, 50 ml and PCR96
• Zeiss Observer Z1M dissecting microscope with KL 1500 LCD cold light source and AxioVision camera: objective - PlanApo S 0.63X FWD 81mm
• NanoDrop ND-1000 spectrophotometer
• Sartorius analytical balance LE244S with draft shield - max 240 g, d = 0.1mg
• Denver Instrument SI-2002 balance - max 2000 g, d = 0.01 g
• Laurell spin coater model WS-650HZ-23NPP/LITE. This spin coater will accommodate up to 150mm wafers and 127mm x 127mm substrates. Max speed 12,000 rpm
• Thermo Electron Corporation Heraeus vacutherm oven (extracted to LEV system)
• Specac pellet press
• Eppendorf Centrifuge 5804 R: rotors available - F-34-6-38 fixed angle rotor: max speed 12,000 rpm, various insert adaptors; A-2-DWP Deepwell plate: max speed 4,000rpm, 2 buckets
• Eppendorf centrifuge 5424 R: rotor available FA-45-24-11, max speed 15,000rpm
• Eppendorf MiniSpin centrifuge: rotor available - F-4
