Correlative Light Electron Microscopy (CLEM) uses a combination of an optical microscope and an electron microscope, where the former is typically a fluorescence microscope. Two images of the sample are taken simultaneously - one with the optical light, the other with the electron beam. These images are then overlayed. By using the different microscopes, information at different length scales can be determined. The fluorescence microscope highlights the regions of interest, while the electron microscopes provides high-resolution at the nanoscale. CLEM is used in protein and tissue research.
