Inside Diamond: public open days

The next Inside Diamond: public open day will take place in person on Saturday 21st March 2026. The ballot for this event has now closed. All applicants will be notified of the outcome of their entry no more than one week after the closing date.

These events are very popular and we have a limit on the number of visitors we can accommodate so we operate a ballot system to offer a fair allocation of spaces. For this reason only one entry is permitted per household. We ask that those who have attended an Inside Diamond: public open day refrain from entering the ballot again for at least a year to allow other visitors the opportunity to attend.

Whilst we understand the disappointment in not receiving tickets we ask that you remain respectful when contacting the team.

Our Inside Diamond: public open days offer the chance for members of the public to visit the facility and see inside our particle accelerator and experimental laboratories. You will also meet some of the people who work at Diamond and can ask them about the work they do; from magnet engineers to vacuum technicians to beamline scientists. 

A typical visit will take approximately 2.5 hours and will consist of:

• An introductory talk giving a general overview of Diamond and what it is used for.
• A guided tour, including a trip to see inside the synchrotron and our laboratories.
• An opportunity to engage with demonstrations and activities run by Diamond staff, users and partner institutions. 

There are several starting times for the visits which you can select during the booking process (9:30, 11:00, 12:45 and 14:15).

• We can only accommodate a limited number of 'in person' visitors. To ensure that a variety of visitors can join us we limit tickets to 6 people per ballot entry.
• During the guided tour there will be extensive walking. We advise all visitors to wear comfortable, closed-toed footwear.
• Due to the nature of the facility we do not admit visitors under the age of 6. These visits are more suitable for adults and children aged 11+.
• Visitors under the age of 16 must be accompanied by an adult. 
• We have very few restrictions for those with health and mobility issues. We will ask you to tell us of any special requirements during registration so we can ensure suitable tour routes are available.
• It can feel quite warm in the synchrotron building, so please utilise the facilities available to leave any layers or coats before the tours.
