Direct Energy Deposition (DED) is a commonly used method for manufacturing high-performance engine parts, especially in aerospace and automotive industries. It is often used to repair or add features to existing parts, making it ideal for maintenance and extending the life of expensive engine components.
In a recent study Rolls Royce, University College London (UCL), the University of Manchester, and the University of Sheffield used Diamond’s I12 Joint Engineering, Environmental and Processing (JEEP) beamline to capture high-speed radiographic images in real-time and observe the effects of varying gas flow rates on the melt pool geometry during the DED process.
This technique provided detailed insights into how different gas flow conditions influence melt pool shape, track width, layer thickness, and porosity formation. Such real-time observations are essential for identifying optimal processing parameters and mitigating defects, thereby enhancing the overall quality and consistency of AM parts.
