Imaging beamlines

I12 is a high-energy beamline principally for material science, engineering and processing science. The instrument's main focus is to allow in situ studies of samples in environments as close as possible to real-world environments using imaging, tomography, diffraction and small-angle scattering. I12 is particularly well suited to study large or dense objects and offers a unique sample and environment installation facility for weights up to 2000kg.

Benefits:

• Uses high-energy X-rays making it possible to image a larger range of materials of different densities and sample thicknesses
• High-speed imaging allowing time-resolved in situ measurements
• Enables monochromatic or polychromatic (“white beam”) X-rays that can open up the number of techniques available

I13 is Diamond's longest beamline, dedicated to imaging, tomographic and coherence experiments across the biological, medical, geological, material, engineering and archealogical sciences.

Benefits:

• Absorption contrast and in-line phase contrast imaging are both available
• Imaging can be conducted with both pink (range of wavelengths) and monochromatic light (single wavelength)
• High flux for rapid, high-resolution images
• Enables contrast enhancement at the edges of structures. This can help with viewing materials of similar density
• Easily tuneable monochromatic beam to penetrate or provide contrast from the sample being investigated

Best for

• Studying rapid dynamic processes eg. batteries, bubble dynamics in molten metals
• Biomedical applications in which absorption contrast between structures is weak

B24 is a full-field transmission microscope at Diamond designed specifically to meet the rising demand for tomographic imaging of biological specimens under near physiological conditions.

• Allows the acquisition of tomographic data from both native and fluorescently-labeled samples
• Allows data to be collected on either side of an absorption edge
• Enables tomographic imaging under near-physiological conditions
